MISS SAM LIFTS OFF FROM VIRGINIA COAST
Wallops Island, Virginia (JFK+50) Miss Sam, a 6 pound rhesus monkey, lifted off successfully today aboard Little Joe 1B in a test of the Mercury spacecraft.
Miss Sam, named after the Air Force School of Aviation Medicine, lifted off from Wallops Island, Virginia.
Miss Sam's spacecraft reached an altitude of 9 miles.
The flight lasted 58 minutes & the spacecraft & Miss Sam were recovered in the Atlantic Ocean by a US Marine helicopter.

Quebec City, Canada (JFK+50) The flag of Quebec was adopted today here in Quebec City & was flown for the 1st time over the National Assembly.
The flag consists of a white cross taken from the ancient royal flags of France & white fleurs-de-lis & a blue field from a banner honoring the Virgin Mary.

IRISH PROCLAIM INDEPENDENCE
Dublin, Ireland (JFK+50) At a meeting of the 1st Dail Elreann in the Mansion House here in Dublin, the Irish proclaimed their independence today.
"Where as the Irish People is by right a free people.
And where as the Irish Republic was proclaimed in Dublin on Easter Monday, 1916, by the Irish Republican Army, acting on behalf of the Irish people
Now....we, the elected representatives of the ancient Irish People in National Parliament assembled, do, in the name of the Irish Nation, ratify the establishment of the Irish Republic & pledge ourselves & our people to make this declaration...effective."*
