MARIA SHRIVER & ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MARRIED 27 YEARS AGO TODAY

Hyannis Port, Massachusetts (JFK+50) 27 years ago today, April 26, 1986, Maria Shriver*, the niece of President John F. Kennedy, married Arnold Schwarzenegger** here in Hyannis, Massachusetts.

The ceremony took place at St. Francis Xavier Church where there were 500 guests. The bride's cousin, Caroline Kennedy, was the maid of honor while former Mr. Universe, Franco Columbu, was best man.

The reception following the service was held at the Kennedy Compound.

Maria was introduced to Mr. Schwarzenegger by NBC News reporter Tom Brokaw at a 1977 charity tennis tournament.

Maria and Arnold separated after 25 years of marriage in 2011.


               
*Maria Owings Shriver, born on Nov. 6, 1955 in Chicago, was the 2nd child of Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver.  She earned a BA degree in American Studies from Georgetown University in 1977.

She began a broadcasting career in Philadelphia which led to co-anchor positions with CBS Morning News, NBC Sunday Today, and NBC Nightly News Weekend Edition.

As 1st Lady of the State of California she worked on raising awareness for contributions of women to the state, finding solutions for poverty and emphasis of community service.

**Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger, born in Thal, Austria on July 30, 1947, became a bodybuilder at age 14.  He served in the Austrian army during which time he won the Junior Mr. Europe contest.

AS won the Mr. Universe title in 1967 and came to the US the following year at the age of 21. He was so impressed by Richard Nixon during the 1968 presidential campaign, he became a Republican. 

In 1970, he won the Mr. Olympia title for the 1st of 7 times. As an actor he starred in Conan the Barbarian in 1982 and The Terminator in 1984.

Arnold Schwarzenegger became the 38th Governor of California serving from 2003 to 2011.
