FORMER KING EDWARD VIII WEDS WALLIS WARFIELD

DUKE OF WINDSOR MARRIED WALLIS WARFIELD 77 YEARS AGO

London, U.K. (JFK+50) 77 years ago today, June 3, 1937, the Duke of Windsor and former King Edward VIII of Great Britain and Northern Ireland married American divorcee Wallis Warfield.

The Duke abdicated the British throne on December 10, 1936 after 325 days of rule.

In his radio address on that day, King Edward said:

"I have found it impossible to carry on the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge the duties of king...without the help and support of the woman I love."

Edward died in Paris in 1972 followed by his wife in 1986.

JFK AND KHRUSHCHEV MEET IN VIENNA

Vienna, Austria (JFK+50) President and Mrs. John F.  Kennedy arrived in here in Vienna 53 years ago today, June 3, 1961, after a whirlwind visit to France.

The Kennedys were greeted at Schwechat Airport by Adolf Sharf, President of Austria.  

JFK met Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev for the first time at the American Embassy.

Mr. Kennedy was accompanied by Secretary of State Dean Rusk and National Security Adviser McGeorge Bundy.

Mr. Khrushchev was assisted by Andrei Gromyko and Anatoliy Dobrynin.

In four hours of summit, the issues discussed included the situation in Laos.

POPE JOHN XXIII DIES 

Rome, Italy (JFK+50) Pope John XXIII, died 53 years ago today, June 3, 1961, at the Vatican here in Rome.

The Pope, who was 81 years old at the time of his death, was elected on October 28, 1958.

President Kennedy said the Pope's...

"wisdom, compassion and kindly strength have bequeathed humanity a new legacy of purpose and courage for the future."

FIRST AMERICAN WALKED IN SPACE 49 YEARS AGO TODAY

Houston, Texas (JFK+50) Major Edward H. White II became the first American to walk in space 49 years ago today, June 3, 1965.

White followed Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei A. Leonov who became the first man to walk in space earlier in March.

White was attached to his Gemini IV spacecraft by a 25 foot tether.  He was able to control his movements with an oxygen jet propulsion system.

His walk lasted 20 minutes.

Major White died on January 27, 1967 along with Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee, when, as they were doing testing on the launchpad, a fire broke out in the cabin.
