BAKER STREET MUSICAL OPENED IN BOSTON 50 YEARS AGO TODAY
Boston, Massachusetts (JFK+50) Baker Street, a musical composed by Canadians Marion Grudeff and Ray Jessel, opened here in Boston 50 years ago today, December 28, 1964, following its two week run in Toronto.
The musical, loosely based on the Sherlock Holmes mystery "A Scandal in Bohemia" by Arthur Conan Doyle, is set in London around the time of England's Diamond Jubilee, a celebration of the reign of Queen Victoria.

The Broadway version opened on February 16, 1965 at the Broadway Theatre in New York City. It ran for nine months and was nominated for four Tony Awards. Baker Street won Best Scene Design by Oliver Smith.
Baker Street, billed as an evening with Sherlock Holmes, was presented in two sets with a prologue and included sixteen scenes.
The original Broadway cast included Inga Swenson, Fritz Weaver, Peter Sallis, Martin Gabel, Virginia Vestoff and Teddy Green. The show was produced by Alexander H. Cohen.
Among the more memorable numbers performed in the play were "What A Night This Is Going To Be," "Roof Space," "I'd Do It Again," and "It's So Simple."
