NATIONAL PATRIOTIC LEAGUE SAYS AMERICA IS AWAKE
Chicago, Illinois (JFK+50) One hundred years ago tonight, July 23, 1917, the National Patriotic League was organized at the Congress Hotel* here in the Windy City.
The Chicago Daily Tribune reported that the "avowed object" of the organization was "to warn the world that America is awake."
One of the members of the executive committee, A. H. Stoddard said that the league would arouse patriotism "through the elimination of self."
Other members of the board included J.J. Cusick, W.S. Booth, Thomas R. Jonestone, and chairman F.D. Cornell of Frederick, Bartlett and Company.
*Byron Beck of City Pass describes Chicago's "Congress (Plaza) Hotel" as the "most haunted hotel on Michigan Avenue. " The CH was built more than 100 years ago to accommodate visitors to the World's Fair. One of its more prominent "ghosts" is reportedly Al Capone.
**Howard Chandler Christy (1872-1952) was born in Ohio & studied art at the National Academy. He painted TR, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, FDR & Truman.
