BRITS HURL GERMANS BACK A MILE

London (JFK+50) One hundred years ago, September 20, 1917, North Country and Australian battalions penetrated the German position and captured all of their objectives in the process.

The objectives included Hemlet, Veldhoek and the western part of Polygon wood.  Zevenkote* was captured along with a few guns.

This accomplishment was detailed in Field Marshal Douglas Haig's** official report.

*Zevenkote is located in the Belgian coastal town of Knokke-Heist.

**Field Marshal Douglas Haig (1861-1928) was born in Edinburgh & studied at Clifton College, Brasenose College Oxford & Staff College Camberley.  He was commander of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in WWI & commanded troops at the Battles of Somme, Third Ypres, German Spring Offensive & Hundred Days Offensive.
