VIRGIN MARY MAKES HER FINAL APPEARANCE AT FATIMA
Fatima, Portugal (JFK+50) One hundred years ago, October 13, 1917, 70,000 people gathered here at Fatima to witness the final appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God.
In May 1917, three children "on their way home from tending a flock of sheep", said they saw the Virgin Mary. The oldest girl, Lucia Santos*, claimed Mary spoke to her and said she would reappear on the 13th day of the following six months.
On the last scheduled day, October 13, the Virgin appeared only to the children calling for repentance and "the building of a chapel at the site." She also predicted an end to the world war and then "lifted her hands to the sky."
Lucia called out "The sun!" whereupon all the witnesses stared into the sky. Some saw the sun dance or zig-zag while other saw brilliant colors in a pinwheel pattern. Others saw nothing.
The ten minute experience became known as the "Miracle of the Sun."
*Lucia de Jesus Rosa dos Santos (1907-2005) was born in Aljustrel, Fatima, Portugal & attended the School of Sisters of St. Dorothy. She professed her first vows in 1928 & perpetual vows in 1934. LS entered the Carmelite Convent in 1948 where she lived until her death.
