Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) The month of November is notable for holding elections for the office of President of the United States.  To date there have been a total of 6 presidential elections held on the 7th day of November.

The first was the election of Zachary Taylor in 1848 and the last was George W. Bush in 2000.

Following is the list of November 7th presidential elections and winners.

1848     Zachary Taylor            Whig
1876      R.B. Hayes                    Republican
1916      Woodrow Wilson       Democrat

*Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to an unprecedented 4th term but died less than 2 months into his 4th term on April 12, 1945.

**This was the first presidential election in which we were eligible to vote.  Although 20 years old in 1968, the age requirement was 21 at that time.

***The result of the Election of 2000 remained in doubt for a month.  Democrat Al Gore won the popular vote by more than 500,000 but the Electoral vote was delayed by a recount in the state of Florida.

When the Supreme Court ruled to end that recount on December 12, 2000, the Electoral vote stood George W. Bush (R) 271, Al Gore, Jr. (D) 266.  The Election of 2000 is the closest presidential election in United States history.
