GOODBYE SIR WINSTON
London (JFK+50) On January 24, 1965, Sir Winston Churchill passed away at his home at Hyde Park Gate* here in London. The body of the former British prime minister would lie in state for three days in Westminster Hall.
Mr. Churchill was buried at the church of St. Martin's located in Bladon, Oxfordshire. He chose the exact plot of burial because it has an unobstructed view of the window where he was born in 1874.
Winston Churchill became prime minister in May 1940 at the time Adolf Hitler's armies had taken most of Europe. The new PM said...
"I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."
In coverage of Mr. Churchill's death, The New York Times wrote...
"He drank wine for breakfast....and champagne and brandy and whiskey...throughout the rest of the day. He smoked cigars continuously. He never exercised. And his health was amazing."
According to William Douglas-Home's oral history at the JFK Library, Senator Kennedy met Winston Churchill at a vacation home in the South of France in 1958. After the meeting, JFK asked his wife "How did I do?" Jackie answered, "I think he thought you were a waiter, Jack."
Richard Langworth writes...
"Churchill expressed admiration of JFK on several occasions and congratulated him after his election."
*Hyde Park Gate is located in Central London on the southern boundary of Kensington Gardens. It is described as a picturesque & very expensive place to live.
