ONE OF THE LAST BATTLES OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN WARS

A SKIRMISH IN BEAR VALLEY

Bear Valley, Arizona (JFK+50) One hundred years ago, January 9, 1918, the United States 10th Cavalry Regiment* engaged a band of Yaquis** here in Bear Valley*** in what was to be one of the last battles of the American Indian wars.  Bear Valley is located across the Mexican border.

Colonel Harold B. Wharfield said...

"the fighting developed into an old kind of Indian engagement with both sides using all the natural cover of boulder and brush..."

The regiment captured ten Yaquis prisoners who had positioned themselves to "slow down the Cavalry advance to enable most of their band to escape."

*The 10th Cavalry is a unit of the United States Army formed as a segregated African-American force--one of the original 'Buffalo Soldiers' regiments of the post-Civil War army.

**Yaquis inhabit the valley of the Rio Yaqui in Mexico as well as the Southwestern United States.  The Pascua Yaqui Tribe is based in Tucson, AZ.

***Today Bear Valley is the location of a popular ski resort.  It is situated between Lake Tahoe & Yosemite.
