INVESTING IN EDUCATION IS INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

JFK ISSUES SPECIAL MESSAGE ON AMERICAN EDUCATION

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On February 6, 1962, President John F. Kennedy sent a Special Message to the United States Congress on the topic of American education.

The President stated that the failure to educate our Nation's young to their "maximum capacity" will negatively effect not only them but also "their families, their communities....and the United States of America."

JFK cited the following statistics for 1962...

*1 million students drop out of high school annually
*thousands of qualified students do not attend college
*of those students who attend college 40% fail to complete their course of study
*the numbers of students entering school are growing rapidly

The President's message included a request for $5.7 billion "to cover improved infrastructure and classroom construction, increased teacher salaries, training and certification, and more."

JFK reminded the Congress that it is the responsibility of the federal government "to ensure access to education for ALL Americans," and that investing in education is of vital importance to the Nation.
