UN SECRETARY-GENERAL KILLED IN PLANE CRASH
The Secretary-General was on a trip to meet Moise Tshombe, leader of the province of Katanga, and to negotiate the crisis in the Congo.
Mr. Hammarskjold was elected Secretary-General of the UN on April 7, 1953.The Secretary-General was awarded the 1961 Nobel Peace Prize.

Salisbury, Rhodesia (JFK+50) On September 18, 1961, United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold* was killed when his Swedish DC6 airplane crashed in northern Rhodesia.
The Secretary-General was on a trip to meet Moise Tshombe, leader of the province of Katanga, and to negotiate the crisis in the Congo.
The Guardian says that a UN report found "significant...evidence" that the Douglas D-6 on which the Secretary-General was a passenger was shot down by another aircraft.

*Dag Hammarskjold (1905-1961) was born in Jonkoping, Sweden & became an economist & diplomat. DH was the 2nd Secretary-General of the UN & the youngest man to hold the position.
