REPS OF JAPANESE EMPIRE SIGN SURRENDER DOCUMENTS
Tokyo, Japan (JFK+50) On September 2, 1945 representatives of the Empire of Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri docked in Tokyo Bay officially ending World War II. General Douglas MacArthur conducted the surrender ceremonies and signed the surrender documents as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers.
The largest crowd in the history of Times Square celebrated the end of World War II in New York City as the "zipper" news-gram flashed "OFFICIAL TRUMAN ANNOUNCEMENT JAPAN SURRENDER****** (the 6 asterisks represent the branches of the US Armed Forces).

^According to Lock, Stock, & History, the General's "ostentatious" cap was created when he was military adviser to the Philippines in 1936. MacArthur's modifications included embroidered gold leaf on the brim & on the U.S. insignia.
