AT THE 11TH HOUR OF THE 11TH DAY OF THE 11TH MONTH

WORLD LEADERS GATHER FOR WWI ARMISTICE CENTENARY

Paris, France (JFK+50) "At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" 100 years ago, November 11, 1918, the armistice ending hostilities in the First World War went into effect.  The agreement between the Allies and Germany was negotiated by Marshal Ferdinand Foch of France.  It ensured the impossibility of Germany "to recommence fighting."

To honor the centenary of the armistice, sixty world leaders, including Donald Trump of the United States, Vladimir Putin of Russia and Emmanuel Macron of France gathered here in Paris for a Peace Forum.

In London, Queen Elizabeth II joined PM Theresa May and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn at the Cenotaph* for a ceremony marking the end of WWI.  At Canberra's National War Museum, ceremonies honored 62,000 Australians and 18,000 New Zealanders who gave their lives in the war.

According to Paul Cornish of The Imperial War Museum, the Germans had hoped that a peace could be achieved based on President Woodrow Wilson's 14 Points.

*The Cenotaph (empty tomb), designed by Edwin Lutyens, was cast in Portland stone & opened on Whitehall in London on Nov 11, 1920.
