BRITISH ATTACK ORS--WAR POET WILFRED OWEN IS KILLED
Ors, France (JFK+50) On November 4, 1918, the British 32nd Division attacked the village of Ors* as part of the Battle of the Sambre. The attack resulted in heavy casualties with the dead buried nearby.
One of the dead included Wilfred Owen**, a noted war poet and winner of the Military Cross. The battle was fought just one week before the armistice ending the First World War, November 11th.
*Ors is a commune located in the Nord department in northern France. It sits on the Sambre-Oise Canal & is famous for its annual water jousting tournament held on August 15th.
**Wilfred Edward Salter Owen (1893-1918) was born in Oswestry, U.K. & attended University College. WESO became a private tutor of English & French before enrolling in Officer Training College. Owen suffered shell shock in WWI & wrote poems including "Futility" & "Strange Meeting." WESO died at age 25 & was promoted to Lt. the day after his death.
