SECOND IN LINE BEHIND THE REAR ADMIRAL'S FLAGSHIP


BATTLESHIP TEXAS SAILS INTO NY HARBOR UPON RETURN FROM WAR

New York City (JFK+50) On December 27, 1918, the U.S.S. Texas* sailed into New York Harbor while hundreds of Texans watched.  

The battleship was second of ten dreadnoughts** in line behind the flagship of Rear Admiral Hugh Rodman***.  The battleship sported 10 inch guns and carried 974 officers & crew.


*U.S.S. Texas (BB-35) is a New York class battleship launched on May 18, 1912 & commissioned on March 12 1914.  She served in the American battle division in the Grand Fleet under Sir David Beatty. 

During WWII, USS Texas escorted convoys across the Atlantic & shelled enemy beaches in Normandy & North Africa.  She also participated in the Battles of Iwo Jima & Okinawa.  USS Texas was the 1st battleship to mount anti-aircraft guns.

**Dreadnoughts are battleships of the early 20th century that were larger & faster than previous vessels.  They carried large caliber guns.

***Admiral Hugh Rodman (1859-1940) was born in Frankfort, KY & graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1880.  AHR served in both the Spanish-American War & WWI & was Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet 1919-1921.
