SENATOR GEORGE EDMUNDS OF VERMONT DIED 100 YEARS AGO
Pasadena, California (JFK+50) On February 27, 1919, former Senator George F. Edmunds* (R-Vermont) died here in Pasadena. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate in 1866 and served in the body until 1891.

Pasadena, California (JFK+50) On February 27, 1919, former Senator George F. Edmunds* (R-Vermont) died here in Pasadena. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate in 1866 and served in the body until 1891.
Senator Edmunds played an active role in the impeachment of Andrew Johnson (1868) and in the Electoral Commission of 1876. He authored the Anti-Plural Marriage Act of 1882**.
The Senator was said to have enjoyed "goading" Southern Democrats, and one who took exception to this wrote in 1880...
"When I look at that man sitting almost alone in the Senate, isolated in his gloom of hatred and bitterness, I am reminded of the worst type of Puritan character."
*George Franklin Edmunds (1828-1919) was born in Richmond, Vermont & was admitted to the Vermont bar at age 21. GFE served in the state House of Representatives and state Senate before being appointed to the U.S. Senate.
**Anti-Plural Marriage Act of 1882 (a.k.a. Edmunds Act) declared polygamy a felony. It prohibited "bigamous behavior." More than 1300 men were imprisoned under the act.
