GM PRODUCES FIRST CORVETTE
Flint, Michigan (JFK+50) On June 30, 1953, the first Corvette rolled off General Motor's assembly line here in Flint. The front engine, rear drive, two door, two passenger 'Vette was produced with the first all fiberglass body in an American sports car. It was named after a small, maneuverable warship.
All Corvettes made in 1953 would be white convertibles with red interiors and black tops. Only 300 cars were made in the 1953 model year, but there were 3640 manufactured in 1954. The second year model was available in blue, red, black or white.
By 1961, the 'Vette had become America's favorite sports car. The television show "Route 66" helped to popularize the vehicle.
