"THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM OF CHOICE AMONG PEOPLES HAS AGAIN TRIUMPHED"


ALGERIA GRANTED INDEPENDENCE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On July 3, 1962, France granted the North African country of Algeria* her independence.  President John F. Kennedy sent congratulations to the people of Algeria but withheld diplomatic recognition until a stable government was established.

The President's message included these words...

"I am proud that it falls to me as the President of the United States to voice the profound satisfaction we feel that the cause of freedom of choice among peoples has again triumphed."

*The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria is the 10th largest country in the world, the world's largest Arab nation & the largest country in Africa.  Its' motto is "By the people & for the people."  Algeria has the 2nd largest oil reserves on the continent.
