KENNEDY CENTER OPENS IN WASHINGTON
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On September 8, 1971, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts opened here in the Nation's Capital. Almost a decade before, the President spoke to the board of trustees & advisory committee of the National Cultural Center. He reaffirmed the goal of building a performing arts facility. The President said that the creation of a great cultural center in Washington is "a most important national responsibility."
*The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, located at 2700 F. Street NW in Washington, D.C. hosts 3500 performances for over 2 million people yearly. The Center produces theater, dance, ballet, and various types of musical programs. Designed by architect Edward Durrell Stone, the Kennedy Center is administered by a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution.
