"THE BEST POLITICAL POLITICAL REPORTER I EVER WORKED WITH"

NEW FRONTIER NEWSMAN SANDER VANOCUR DIES AT 91

Santa Barbara, California (JFK+50) On September 16, 2019, New Frontier newsman Sander "Sandy" Vanocur* passed away at the age of 91 here in Santa Barbara.

Mr. Vanocur's broadcast career with NBC NEWS spanned the years 1957 to 1971.  The New York Times describes Sandy as "the last surviving journalist who questioned Nixon and Kennedy in the first televised presidential debate."

In that broadcast, Mr. Vanocur asked Vice-President Nixon about a comment made by President Dwight D. Eisenhower that "he could not remember a single idea of Nixon's that was adopted."  Later, Mr. Nixon wrote that the question "had hurt."

Sandy also asked Senator Kennedy a tough question:  How could JFK expect to get legislation passed as President when he had not been able to as a congressman or senator?

Sander Vanocur was also one of the correspondents who questioned President Kennedy in a televised interview in the Oval Office in December 1962.  At one point Sandy asked about JFK's discussion with the Soviet ambassador in the Oval Office.  JFK laughed and said the ambassador was "sitting next to you."  Mr. Vanocur replied, "He's no friend of mine."

NBC's Reuven Frank called Sandy "the best political reporter I ever worked with."

*Sander "Sandy" Vanocur (1928-2019) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and earned a B.S. in Political Science at Northwestern University.  SV served two years in the U.S. Army before entering a career in broadcast journalism.
