"TO HELP RELIEVE THE SUFFERING"

JFK OFFERS HELP FOR VICTIMS OF FLOODING IN BURMA

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On September 16, 1961, President John F. Kennedy sent a message to Prime Minister U Nu* of Burma expressing sympathy for the victims of severe flooding in his country.  The President wrote that American Ambassador to Burma John S. Everton** had "already made certain funds available for relief."

Mr. Kennedy added that he asked the Ambassador to discuss with the government of Burma other measures that the United States could take "to help relieve suffering." 

*U Nu (1907-1995) was born in Myanmor, Burma & graduated from Rangoon University in 1929.  UN served as Prime Minister of Burma 1948-1956, 1957-1958 & 1960-1962.

**John Scott Everton (1908-2003) was educated at Colgate, Cambridge & Yale.  He served as president of Kalamazoo College & U.S. Ambassador to Burma (1961-1963).
