JFK PRESENTS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL TO GENERAL LEMNITZER
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On October 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy presented the Distinguished Service Medal to General Lyman L. Lemnitzer* who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from September 30, 1960 through September 30, 1962.
The ceremony took place in the Rose Garden at the White House. The President said...
"General Lemnitzer has had an extraordinary career. He was highly recommended to me for his character and integrity and ability by General Eisenhower.
...that he has been willing to undertake...the most important command in the United States...Commander of our forces in Europe..."
*Lyman L. Lemnitzer (1899-1988) was born in Honesdale, PA & graduated from West Point in 1920. He graduated from US Army Command & General Staff College in 1936.
LLL rose to Brigadier General serving on General Eisenhower's staff during WWII. He also served in the Korean War. LLL was Commander of NATO forces 1962-1969 & later was appointed to the Rockefeller Commission investigating CIA involvement in the assassination of JFK.
