"A PEOPLE THAT LOVES FREEDOM WILL IN THE END BE FREE"

JFK VISITS TOMB OF SIMON BOLIVAR

Caracas (JFK+50) On December 17, 1961, President John F. Kennedy laid a wreath at the tomb of Simon Bolivar* located in the National Pantheon here in Caracas.  

Bolivar, described by Scott S. Smith as "one of the most powerful figures in world political history," played a major role in the independence movement in Latin America.  Through his leadership, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Peru and Venezuela won their independence from Spain.

In his most famous document, Letter from Jamaica (1815), Simon Bolivar wrote...

"A people that loves freedom will in the end be free." 

*Simon Bolivar (1783-1830) led the independence movement for six nations & became known as "The Liberator".  SB was born in Caracas & was educated in military school.  Through his leadership, Venezuela became the first colony of the Spanish empire to break free.
