FUTURE FIRST LADY BORN IN KARNACK, TEXAS
Karnack (JFK+50) On December 22, 1912, Claudia Alta Taylor was born here in Karnack, Texas. Most Americans would not recognize the name, but the baby girl's nurse said she was "as pretty as a lady bird." Miss Taylor married Lyndon B. Johnson in 1934, and the rest is history.
Lady Bird graduated from St. Mary's Episcopal College for Women in Dallas and went on to earn two degrees from the University of Texas.
As First Lady, Mrs. Johnson started a Capital beautification project and promoted passage of the Highway Beautification Act. She was also an avid supporter of the Head Start program.
Lady Bird Johnson died on July 11, 2007 and was the first First Lady to die in the 21st Century.
