"WE SHOULD SEEK TO STRENGTHEN THE UNITED NATIONS"

JFK SPEAKS TO WOMEN'S DELEGATION OF THE UN

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On December 11, 1961, President John F. Kennedy spoke to a delegation of women assigned to missions of the United Nations* in the Rose Garden at the White House.

The president expressed appreciation for their efforts in behalf of the world peace organization.  President Kennedy said...

"I have a strong conviction that we should seek to strengthen the United Nations and make it the kind of instrument which all of us hope it will be."

The President welcomed the delegation to the United States and expressed the hope that they would be able to see more of the country during their visit besides New York City.  He suggested Boston and "even further West."

One of the U.N. delegates said that she believed a future female POTUS would invite male delegates to the White House.  JFK answered that he was nervous about whether to address women who are political activists "as women" or "as politicians," but he added... "we are grateful to have you as both today."
