CALVIN COOLIDGE STRICKEN BY HEART ATTACK
Northampton (JFK+50) On January 5, 1933, Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States, passed away at his home* here in Northampton, Massachusetts.
Amity Shlaes describes the day...
"Grace...found him in his dressing room, he was already gone. He had been shaving, just as he had been the first time she saw him. He had removed his jacket. She could see from where Coolidge lay on the floor that it had all come over him suddenly. The heart attack he had always feared had come."
Mr. Coolidge was the only living former POTUS at the time of his death at the age of sixty. He had recently complained about indigestion but passed a medical examination.
The body remained at the President's home until the day of the funeral service at Edwards Congregational Church on January 7th. The remains were transported by automobile after the service to Plymouth, Vermont for burial.
*The Coolidge home, known as "The Beeches" is a six bedroom home located on 15 acres of land with panoramic views of the Holyoke Mountain range. President & Mrs. Coolidge lived in the home from 1930 to 1933. The estate was sold for $520,000 in 1987.
