"THE SOONER THE BOLSHEVIK MENACE IS STAMPED OUT, THE QUICKER THE NATION WILL RETURN TO NORMAL"

SPOKANE DAILY CHRONICLE CALLS FOR UNDESIRABLE ALIENS TO BE SHIPPED OUT

Spokane, Washington (JFK+50) One hundred years ago, January 7, 1920, The Spokane Daily Chronicle published an editorial calling for undesirable aliens, bolsheviks in particular, to be deported.

The editorial stated...

"When any man from a foreign land sees fit to attack the government, refuse to obey the law..., or preach the doctrine of bolshevism*, then it is time for the person to be conducted to the coast and his face turned toward the country from which he came."

This attitude was part of "a wave of anti-Bolshevist and anti-foreign sentiment (that) swept the United States" in the aftermath of the Russian revolution and World War I.

The editorial concluded...

"The sooner the country is cleaned up and the bolshevik menace is stamped out, the quicker will be the nation's return to a normal basis."

*Bolshevism is the doctrine or program of the Bolsheviks advocating the violent overthrow of capitalism. Also, Russian communism.
