"THIS SORORITY HAS RAISED OVER $600,000 FOR SCHOLARSHIPS"

JFK SPEAKS AT 50TH ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON OF DELTA SIGMA THETA

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On January 12, 1963, President John F. Kennedy spoke at the 50th anniversary luncheon of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority* held at the International Inn here in the Nation's Capital.

The President said...

"This sorority has raised over $600,000 for scholarships, and I hope that it will stimulate others to concern themselves and the American people.

We want our citizens to be the best educated in the world, and it can be done by private groups such as you, by families, by local communities, by cities, by States, and by the National Government."

*Delta Sigma Theta is a African-American sorority founded at Howard University.  DST is dedicated to public service with an emphasis on programs that target the African-American community.  The sorority took part in the Women's Suffrage March held in Washington, D.C. on March 3, 1913.
