GROVE CITY COLLEGE RADIO IS "ON THE AIR"
Grove City, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On April 26, 1920, college radio made its first broadcast from Grove City College*. The broadcast was made possible by Dr. Herbert Harmon who had developed "a practical radiophone for the amateur" in 1919.
The broadcast was of a speech by college president Wein C. Keller. It was received 20 miles away by the New Castle Rotary Club. The broadcast came before the 1st commercial radio station in the United States took to the airways.
The college station, which would be called "The One," claimed to be the first (radio) station on the air in the country."**
*Grove City College is a private Christian liberal arts college located in Grove City, PA. It was founded in 1876 by Isaac C. Keller as Pine Grove Normal Academy.
**WSAJ was assigned its call letters in April 1920. It broadcast at 100 watts of power on 1340 AM. The station surrendered its license in 2006.
