"WE MUST PROVIDE THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM REQUIRED BY THE U.S. TODAY & TOMORROW"

TRANSPORTATION POLICY "CHAOTIC" SAYS JFK

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 5, 1962, President John F. Kennedy  called America's national transportation policy a "chaotic patchwork of inconsistent and often obsolete legislation".

The President asked Congress for a new national transportation policy that would emphasize less federal regulation and provide federal aid for mass transit systems in major cities.

Under JFK's proposal, railroads and trucking companies could cut rates on bulk commodities while railroads, airlines and bus companies could lower passenger fares without approval from the federal government.

While the President admitted the cost of this proposed new transportation program would be high, he said...

"We must begin to make the painful decisions necessary to provide the transportation system required by the United States of today & tomorrow."
