"THE LARGEST CHRISTIAN CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES"

D.C. BASILICA CELEBRATES 100th ANNIVERSARY

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 16, 2020, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception*, located here in the Nation's Capital, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the "blessing of the land on which it was built."

The site was blessed by Archbishop Giovanni Bonzano on May 16, 1920 with more than 6000 in attendance.  The Basilica is the largest Christian church in North America and the second largest in the world.

The altar of the Basilica was used by Bishop John Carroll** dating back to 1774.

*Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Avenue NE, Washington, D.C., is the largest Christian Church in the United States and the 2nd largest habitable building in the District of Columbia.  The Basilica serves the Catholic University of America which is adjacent.

**John Carroll (1735-1815) was born in Upper Marlboro, MD. He was educated at Heythrop College, the University of London, College of St. Omar, Bruges & Liege.  JC founded Georgetown University & was the 1st bishop & archbishop of the United States.
