"A SUBDUED CEREMONY HELD IN THE MIDST OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC"

70TH ANNIVERSARY OF START OF KOREAN CONFLICT (1950-2020)

Seoul, South Korea (JFK+50) On June 25, 1950, the North Korean People's Army, supported by the Soviet Union, crossed the 38th parallel marking the beginning of the Korean Conflict.

The United Nations Security Council, meeting in New York City, unanimously condemned the invasion and President Harry S Truman ordered United States air and naval forces to support South Korea two days after the invasion.

Korea was divided at the Potsdam Conference and in December 1945, a Joint Commission of representatives of the United States and USSR agreed to allow a five year trusteeship for North Korea by the Soviet Union and a five year trusteeship for South Korea by the United States.

According to The Canadian Press, a "subdued ceremony" marking the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War was held at Parliament Hill on Sunday.  This event was one of the first of its kind to be held in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Press reports that the small group of participants wore face masks and practiced social distancing during the event.
