JEAN KENNEDY SMITH DIES AT 92

New York City (JFK+50) On June 17, 2020, Jean Kennedy Smith*, the last surviving sibling of the Joseph and Rose Kennedy clan, passed away at her home in Manhattan.  Mrs. Smith was 92 years old.

Robert McFadden describes Jean Kennedy Smith as "the first woman of her generation to take on a serious political role."

At the age of 65, Jean was appointed ambassador to Ireland by President Bill Clinton.  In that capacity, she contributed to peace in Northern Ireland.

Jean founded Very Special Arts, an organization dedicated to creating a society where those with disabilities can take part in the arts.  She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.

Mrs. Smith is survived by daughters Kym and Amanda, and sons Stephen Jr. and William.  She is also survived by six grandchildren.

*Jean Ann Kennedy Smith (1928-2020) was born in Brookline, Massachusetts.  She was the 8th of 9 children of Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy.  JAKS graduated from Manhattanville College of Sacred Heart.  In 1956 she married Stephen Smith.  The couple had four children.
