Kingsport, Tennessee (JFK+50) On July 17, 1920, Tennessee Eastman* was officially incorporated. The company, which manufactured methanol, methyl acetone and related products, began operation with $3.5 million in capital.
Kodak founder George Eastman** arrived in Kingsport in July 1920 where he purchased 35 acres with factory buildings from American Wood Reduction Company. This would provide "a source of raw materials for the manufacture of products to be used in the film industry."
Perley S. Wilcox was director and general manager. He became vice-president in 1921.
*Tennessee Eastman Corporation played a major role in contributing to the United States effort during WWII. The company developed a method of making synthetic rubber. Today, known as Eastman Chemical, the company is the 5th largest employer in the state.
**George Eastman (1854-1932) was born in Waterville, NY. He was self-educated & in 1884 patented the 1st practical film roll form.
GE incorporated Eastman-Kodak Corporation in 1892. By 1896, EK was the leading supplier of film.
