CARRIE CHAPMAN CATT MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO NEW YORK CITY
New York City (JFK+50) On August 27, 1920, Carrie Chapman Catt* made a triumphant return to New York City the day after the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote was confirmed by a proclamation of the Secretary of State.
Ms. Catt was welcomed to the Big Apple by New York Governor Al Smith. She then participated in a "Victory Parade" down 7th Avenue.
Governor Smith said...
"This is a glorious and wonderful day. I have lived to realize the big, beautiful dream of my life -- the enfranchisement of women."
*Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947) was born in Ripon, WI & educated at Iowa State University (1880). CCC directed the National American Woman Suffrage Association & founded the League of Women Voters (1920). She served as honorary president of the LWV until her death.
