"ONCE THE MOTION TO RECONSIDER IS DISPOSED OF THERE CAN BE NO FURTHER ACTION ON SUFFRAGE"

TENNESSEE HOUSE SPEAKER MAKES PLAY TO REVERSE RATIFICATION OF SUFFRAGE AMENDMENT

Nashville, Tennessee (JFK+50) On August 20, 1920, two days after the Tennessee House of Representatives passed the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, Speaker Seth Walker made a motion to adjourn until Monday.  The Speaker had changed his 'Nay' vote of the 18th to 'Aye' to enable reconsideration and possible reversal of ratification of the amendment within a two day period.

Having failed to secure the necessary votes to reverse, the Speaker made a play on the 20th to adjourn in order to have more time to get those votes.  His play did not work, however, because the House only agreed for a one day adjournment.

David Dismore writes...

"Once the motion to reconsider is disposed of, there can be no further action on suffrage by the Tennessee house."
