SAX MASTER CHARLIE PARKER, JR. BORN IN KANSAS CITY

Kansas City, Missouri (JFK+50) On August 29, 1920, future American jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, Jr.* was born here in Kansas City.  Parker is considered  "one of the most innovative and influential musicians in American History."

Parker played alto and tenor saxophone with Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis in New York City during the mid 1940s.  They collaborated on both recordings and live performances.

PBS Masters Series describes Charlie Parker, Jr. as "one of the most profoundly original American musicians."

*Charles "Bird" Parker, Jr. (1920-1955) was born in Kansas City, Mo.  He began to study the saxophone at age 11.  CP became an icon for the hipster subculture & the Beat Generation.  Despite his success in the music industry, CP had a history of mental health issues and heroin addiction.
