"CLOSED VENUES & COMPULSORY MASKS WERE NOW LIFTED"

SYDNEY SINGERS GIVE GLEE PERFORMANCE AT RANDWICK HOSPITAL

Sydney, NSW, Australia (JFK+50) On September 9, 1920, nineteen singers from Sydney's Inner West churches gave their first performance at Randwick Hospital.

The 'Glee Performance' was conducted by Tom Downer in Hut 13 of the hospital. The group expanded over the years to become the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs*.

In September 1920, Sydney was opening up after the end of the pneumonic plague** epidemic.  "Closed venues and compulsory masks" had been lifted. 

*Sydney Philharmonia Choirs:  Australia's largest choral organization which presents annual concerts at the Sydney Opera House and other venues in New South Wales.  SPC serves as the chorus for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

**Pneumonic plague:  Uncommon infectious disease caused by spread of bacteria.  The plague occurs when the bacteria is inhaled.
