BAND-AID INVENTED 100 YEARS AGO TODAY
Highland Park, New Jersey (JFK+50) On September 22, 1920, Earle Dickson* invented the Band-Aid for his wife, Josephine Knight, who often burned herself while cooking.
Mr. Dickson, an employee of Johnson & Johnson**, presented his invention to his boss, James Wood Johnson, and the Band-Aid soon went into production.
The first band-aids were not very popular but in 1924 Johnson & Johnson introduced machine manufactured band-aids. The company began to sell sterilized band-aids in 1939.
Johnson & Johnson has sold 100 billion Band-Aids worldwide.
*Earle Dickson (1892-1961) was born in Grandview (Rhea County), TN & is best known for inventing adhesive bandages in the United States. ED was promoted to vice-president after presenting his invention to Johnson & Johnson. He retired in 1957.
**Johnson & Johnson, headquartered in New Brunswick NJ, was founded in 1886. J&J produces medical devices, pharmaceutical & consumer packaged goods. Its 2019 revenue was $82 billion.
