"SILENT EXPRESSION OF RESPECT FOR PRESIDENT WILSON"

DEMOCRATS JOIN HANDS AT WHITE HOUSE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) At 8 p.m. on Monday, November 1, 1920, the night before Election Day, a crowd of Democratic "admirers and sympathizers' marched from party headquarters at 1345 Pennsylvania Avenue NW to the White House (1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW)."

At the Executive Mansion, the marchers formed a circle and joined hands "in silent expression of respect for President (Woodrow) Wilson."

Banners representing each state of the Union were carried in the parade down Pennsylvania Avenue.  The event was arranged by John F. Costello*, Democratic national committeeman representing the District of Columbia.

President Wilson would turn the power of the presidency over to Warren G. Harding on March 4, 1921.

 

*John Francis Costello (1872-1938) was born in the District of Columbia & lived at 3140 Newark St., NW in Washington.  JFC was married to Agnes L. Killeen Costello (1878-1960) & was an honorary member of the United Spanish American War Veterans.  He was buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in D.C.
