HERMANN GORNER SETS WORLD WEIGHT-LIFTING RECORD, STANDS 100 YEARS LATER
Germany (JFK+50) On October 8, 1920, Hermann Gorner*, a German weight lifter, set an unofficial record for the most weight lifted with one hand. The record still stands 100 years later according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
On October 29, 1920, in official competition at Leipzig, Gorner picked up a bar weighing 730 pounds.
*Hermannn Gorner (1891-1956) was born in Hanichen, Germany. He started weight lifting at the age of 10 & became an all-round athlete who worked as a model for painters and sculptors. HG was 6'1" & 265 pounds. HG served in WWI where he was injured by shrapnel & lost an eye.
