"NIXON: CONSERVATIVE AT HOME, RISK TAKER ABROAD"

JFK SAYS AMERICANS WANT SOMEONE WHO IS 'LIBERAL AT HOME & CAREFUL ABROAD'

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On October 10, 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy, Democratic nominee for POTUS, spoke at Syria Mosque* here in Pittsburgh.  The Senator said...

"Mr. Nixon said in one of his franker moments 'I am a conservative at home and a risk taker abroad,' and I don't think the American people want either in 1960.

I think (they) want somebody who is liberal at home and who is careful abroad.  I think they want somebody who builds the strength of the country, who carries a big stick and speaks softly around the world."

Senator Kennedy concluded his remarks with these words...

"I can assure you that if we are successful on November 8, we are going to...build our strength, maintain our freedom (and) re-establish our position as a source and inspiration and friend of freedom around the world..."

*Syria Mosque, located at 4400 Bigelow Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA, was built in 1911 & dedicated in 1916.  The 3700 seat performance venue was originally built for the Shriners.
