PRESIDENT-ELECT GOES FISHING & GOLFING IN TEXAS
Point Isabel, Texas (JFK+50) On November 9, 1920, Associated Press reported that President-elect Warren G. Harding began his vacation in Texas "outwardly as carefree as the happiest member of" the fishermen of Port Isabel*.
In the morning, the President-elect planned to fish and in the afternoon he was scheduled for a game of golf at the Brownsville Country Club. AP reported that Senator Harding "looked robust and vigorous" despite having finished a strenuous presidential campaign.
The Senator would also take a cruise along the coast on a launch furnished by Texas Governor William P. Hobby**.
*Port Isabel is located in Cameron County, TX & is part of the Brownsville metro area. It was an important cotton export port before the Civil War.
**William Pettus Hobby (1878-1964) was born in Moscow, TX. At age 39, WPH became the youngest Governor of Texas in history. He served 1917-1921. In 1924, WPH became president of the Houston Post. In 1931, he married Oveta Culp Hobby who later would be chosen as the 1st Secretary of the Department of Health, Education & Welfare.
