"1ST VPOTUS TO ASSUME THE PRESIDENCY"

FORMER PRESIDENT TYLER DIES OF STROKE IN RICHMOND

Richmond, Virginia (JFK+5) On January 18, 1862, John Tyler*, the first Vice-President of the United States to assume the presidency upon the death of a POTUS, died here in Richmond.

Tyler, a native of Virginia, was a delegate to the state's secession convention and was elected to serve in the Congress of the Confederate States of America but died before he could take office.

Mr. Tyler collapsed on January 12, 1862 after complaining of chills and dizziness.  The former POTUS died of a stroke at the age of 71.

*John Tyler (1790-1862) was born in Charles City County, VA.  His father was a plantation owner who had 40 slaves.  JT graduated from William & Mary in 1807 and began his law practice in Richmond.

JT served in the Charles City Rifles in 1813, in the US House of Representatives (1816-1821), Governor of VA (1825-1827), US Senate (1827-1836).  

Tyler was VPOTUS one month before becoming the 10th POTUS.
