"SHANE MACCARTHY, NATIVE OF IRELAND"

JFK MEETS WITH DIRECTOR OF COUNCIL ON YOUTH FITNESS

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On February 17, 1961, President John F. Kennedy met in the Oval Office with Shane MacCarthy*, executive director of the President's Council on Youth Fitness.  The meeting took place at 3 p.m. Eastern time.

Mr. MacCarthy, a native of Ireland, was appointed to his position by President Dwight D. Eisenhower when The President's Council on Fitness of Youth was established in 1956.  

Before his retirement in 1976, Mr. MacCarthy served as Government Affairs Director of the Printing Industries of America.

*Shane MacCarthy (1909-1983) was born in Ireland & moved to the U.S. in 1925.  SM earned his Bachelors & Masters Degrees at Catholic University & his law degree at New York University.

SM began his long career in government with the Agricultural Department in 1934.  He also worked in the Budget Bureau, National Defense Committee & served as a Navy Lt. Commander in WWII.
