SECRETARY WEEKS SAYS THE PEOPLE WERE PROMISED ECONOMY IN GOVERNMENT
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On March 19, 1921, Secretary of War John W. Weeks*, speaking to the Chamber of Commerce here in Pittsburgh, discussed plans "for reorganizing government departments and bureaus...to get greater efficiency and economy."
Secretary Weeks said...
"The people have been promised economy in government. They believe the government has not been economically managed during the last few years. The only way to economize is to stop spending money."
*John Wingate Weeks (1860-1926) was born in Lancaster, N.H. & graduated from US Naval Academy in 1881. JWW made a fortune in banking & served in the Spanish-American War. He was mayor of Newton, MA 1903-04, member of US Congress 1905-13, US Senator 1913-1919, & Sec of War 1921-1925.
