"HE IS A POWERFUL MAN. I THOUGHT HE WAS SICK"

SENATOR  LIFTS MAN ENTERING PRIVATE ELEVATOR OFF HIS FEET

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 15, 1921, Senator Boies Penrose* (R-PA), 6'4" tall, "lifted a short, stubby man" who "was entering the private elevator in the Senate wing of the Capitol" off his feet "and gently but firmly thrust (him) to one side."

According to a front page story in The Evening Star, "the short, stubby man" said..."My, I wonder who that was?"  The elevator operator answered..."That is Senator Penrose of Pennsylvania."

"The short, stubby man" replied...

"He is a powerful man.  I thought he had been sick." 

*Boies Penrose (1860-1921) was born in Philadelphia, PA & graduated 2nd in his class at Harvard, 1881.  BP served in the PA House & Senate, 1885-1897.  BP was a major Harding supporter.  He died of pulmonary thrombosis on Dec 31 1921.
