GERMANS ORDERED TO BAY BILLION GOLD MARKS BY END OF MONTH
Paris, France (JFK+50) On April 25, 1921, the Allied Reparations Commission sent a demand to the German War Burdens Commission that one billion gold marks "be deposited in the Bank of France by April 30."
The ARC note stated...
"In view of the attitude the German government has seen fit to adopt...the Commission...is obliged to exercise the powers conferred upon it by the treaty."
According to the New York Tribune, Germany was obligated by the Versailles Treaty to pay twenty billion gold marks before May 1, 1921.
