"WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY FOR AMERICA"

THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION BEGINS AT LEXINGTON & CONCORD

Boston, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On April 19, 1775, the American Revolutionary War began just outside of Boston with the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

700 British Regulars under Major John Pitcairn confronted a small group of colonials gathered on the Village Green in Lexington around 5 a.m.  When the colonials did not comply with the order to disperse, a shot from a unidentified source was fired followed by a volley and bayonet charge by the King's soldiers.

8 colonials were killed and 10 were wounded.

The Regulars marched on to Concord but were turned back at the Old North Bridge.  Their retreat back to Boston was slowed by colonial 'minutemen' who fired at them from cover.

Samuel Adams, "one of the foremost leaders of the American Revolution," said...

"What a glorious day for America."
